Distracted driving could lead to personal injury

On Behalf of | Jun 2, 2021 | Personal Injury

When you’re driving in North Carolina, it’s easy to find yourself making simple mistakes that could cause an accident. While it’s impossible to avoid all types of driving errors, distractions are one of the most common reasons that you might find yourself in an accident. Knowing what kinds of distractions are most common in the car can help you be more conscious of your habits and make better decisions when driving.

Children are a source of distraction

Children don’t always behave, and some children are so young that you can’t always expect them to be quiet when you’re trying to drive safely. Two of the most common ways that a child could distract you is by crying or getting out of their car seat. You might immediately want to comfort them, but this isn’t always the best option because it could lead to personal injury in an accident. If your child continues to cry, you should pull over to determine if they are bored, have a wet diaper, are hungry or have some other need that you can satisfy to make them happy.

Some children also learn how to climb out of their car seats as they get older, which can be very dangerous. If this happens, you need to find the nearest place to safely pull over so that you can put them back in the car seat. You should also take preventative measures to make it impossible for them to release themselves. Make sure that the straps are tight enough that your child can’t unharness themselves.

The radio

The radio is another common sore spot for people who are prone to distracted driving. The radio can be distracting because manually changing stations on the road causes the driver to take their eyes off the road and hand off the steering wheel. Also, if the radio is loud, it can block out sounds that the driver should hear to avoid potential hazards on the road.

When you’re trying to keep yourself and your passengers safe, you should always make sure that you take the time to get rid of potential distractions. Doing so can help you avoid motor vehicle accidents.
