What not to do after an accident

On Behalf of | Apr 21, 2022 | Personal Injury

If you have been hurt in a car accident while traveling in North Carolina, you may be entitled to compensation. However, there are several common mistakes that you’ll want to avoid making if you want to maximize your chances of obtaining a favorable outcome in your case.

Don’t downplay the severity of your injuries

It may be tempting to tell the other motorist involved in the crash that you haven’t been seriously hurt. This is partly because you might not want to make that person feel bad for making a mistake. It may also be because your body is taking a series of steps to mask the pain that it is in. If you imply that you aren’t hurt immediately after the crash, it may be harder to prove that a concussion, whiplash or other symptoms were caused by the defendant’s actions.

Don’t forget to seek treatment

It is important to see a doctor as soon as possible after a car accident even if you don’t feel like anything is wrong. Doing so enables you to obtain a doctor’s note, test results and other paperwork that may make it easier to prove that you were hurt because of the defendant’s actions. It’s also important that you follow your doctor’s orders to help ensure that you achieve as full of a recovery as possible in a timely manner.

Don’t talk about the case

It’s generally in your best interest to not talk about your case if possible. Refraining from talking about the matter may prevent you from revealing information that could be used against you during settlement talks or at trial.

If you are involved in a car crash that was caused by the negligence of another motorist, you may be entitled to compensation for hospital bills, lost wages and other damages. You can use medical records, witness statements and other types of evidence to prove your claim.
